Experience Moor History: Following in the Footsteps of Dr. Hans Schmeidl
On Saturday, October 17, 2026, a knowledgeable guided hike will lead from Bernau train station into the fascinating moor landscape of the Rottauer Filze. The nature tour combines movement, local history, and insights into the research of a sensitive habitat.
Between Primeval Forest and Former Peat Fields
The route begins at Bernau train station and initially runs along the railway tracks. The hike then takes you through a primeval forest-like landscape section to the former peat extraction fields. This creates an immediate discovery experience amidst moor soil, forest, open landscapes, and cultural-historical traces.
A Celtic Plank Path as a Window into the Past
A special highlight is the trace of a Celtic plank path from pre-Christian times. The historical transit route is connected to the work of Bernau biologist and moor researcher Dr. Hans Schmeidl, who was significantly involved in its research. This makes local history tangible in the field and the cultural heritage of the Chiemgau region accessible.
Picnic at the Kneipp Basin in Rottau
A picnic break is planned at the Kneipp basin near Rottau. Therefore, a packed lunch is part of the appropriate equipment. The entire event lasts about four hours, with approximately three hours of walking time.
Important Notes for the Nature Tour
The hike starts at 1:30 PM at Bernau train station and is expected to end again at the starting point around 5:30 PM. Registration is not required. Participation is free of charge, and the hike is suitable for children from six years old according to event information. The tour will be canceled in case of rain or snowfall.
The discovery experience is aimed at all who wish to connect nature, local history, and moor studies. Experience the Rottauer Filze on a diverse city and landscape tour and discover the traces of Dr. Hans Schmeidl up close.
