Waterburg from Five Centuries: A City Becomes a Work of Art

On Sunday, October 18, 2026, the collection at the historic Brucktor opens its doors for an impressive tour through the art and cultural history of Waterburg. At 3 PM, a 90-minute art experience through five centuries of local city history begins at the former Holy Spirit Hospital.

Four Floors Full of History and Aesthetic Experience

On four floors, visitors encounter paintings, engravings, and sculptures by artists from Waterburg and the surrounding area. Ceramics, silver, tin, tobacco boxes, textiles, and historical molds for stucco, clay, and gingerbread ornaments expand the collection to include artisan testimonies of everyday life.

The Waterburg Hall as a Highlight

Particular attention is paid to the Waterburg Hall. Paintings by Otto Geigenberger, Hans Ganser, Willi Reichert, Karl Wähmann, and Ludwig Weninger coalesce here into a fascinating panorama of regional painting. The works make visible how landscape, cityscape, and bourgeois life have been artistically interpreted over generations.

Collection with a Personal Touch

The extensive collection originates from the Waterburg collector Bernd Joa, who gathered views and objects from his homeland since the 1960s and donated the holdings to the city of Waterburg in 2007. More than 2,000 exhibits connect art historical considerations with local memory culture. The oldest object dates back to 1600, while newer works extend the arc to the present day.

City History Between Art and Craft

The exhibition opens a sensual access to the history of Waterburg: Colors and forms of painting meet the materiality of metal, ceramics, textiles, and wood. In addition to secular themes, several rooms are dedicated to sacred testimonies, including representations of the seven monasteries of the former Wasserburg district. A historical city map from 1815 also introduces visitors to the changing topography of the town by the Inn.

Conclusion: Experience Art History Directly

The tour offers a concentrated consideration of works, cultural education, and a special exhibition atmosphere in the historic Brucktor. Those who want to experience Waterburg not only as a picturesque town but as a developed cultural landscape will discover an extraordinary connection of painting, sculpture, artisanal craft, and city history here. Admission is free; donations for the preservation of the collection are welcome.
