Rare Viol Sounds: A Special Music Evening in Oberaudorf
On Monday, November 9, 2026, the Protestant Community Center in Oberaudorf will transform into an intimate concert hall for historical music. The Byrd Consort featuring Fred Flassig and Michael Steinkühler presents duos for two bass viols – a colorful concert experience between baroque elegance, sonic depth, and meditative calm.
When Two Viols Converse
The bass viol unfolds a warm, velvety sound that directly evokes human voices. In interplay, the two instruments enter into a musical dialogue: lines intertwine, motifs travel through the voices, and every harmonic twist receives space. The historical performance practice thrives on finely tuned articulation, precise synchronization, and a sensitive balance between the voices.
Music by Johann Schenck and French Composers
The focus is on four duos by Johannes Schenck: number nine in E minor, number ten and eleven in G major, and number twelve in D minor. Additionally, André Philidor L’Aîné's Suite in D minor from 1700, two duos from Joseph Bodin de Boismortier's Opus ten, and François Couperin's Concert number 13 in G major from 1724 will be performed. The program thus opens a sonic window into European baroque music.
Experienced Musicians for Early Music
Fred Flassig and Michael Steinkühler founded their duo in 2000. Both musicians studied not only cello but also viola da gamba and worked with notable figures in historical performance practice. Flassig completed his doctorate on solo gamba music in Germany in the 18th century; his ensemble for early music received the cultural award from the city of Regensburg in 2009. Steinkühler was, among other things, the solo cellist in the Essen Chamber Orchestra, taught in Cork, and performed as a gambist solo in several European countries.
Intimate Live Atmosphere in the Protestant Community Center
The reduced ensemble creates closeness and concentration. Instead of large stage effects, the direct sound of the strings, the breath between phrases, and the fine resonances of the instruments take center stage. The conductor is the musical dialogue itself: every movement arises from the mutual listening of the two performers.
Conclusion: Experience Baroque Music Up Close
The music evening offers a concentrated insight into the fascinating world of the viola da gamba. Visitors can expect a delightful concert with rarely performed works, historical sound culture, and two renowned experts in their field. Admission is free, a contribution is welcome. Those who want to not only hear early music but experience it in its full sonic depth should enjoy this evening live in Oberaudorf.
